It may not be the birthday of the first ever Motorcycle but today marks the day when the first Daimler’s motorcycle was unveiled. After working rigorous hours in a converted green house, German automotive pioneer; Gottlieb Daimler, along with lifelong friend and Design assistant Wilhelm Maybach, unveiled what they had been working on in secrecy for years.
Taking Nicolaus Otto`s internal combustion engine idea and boosting it into a high speed, horizontal test engine both Daimler and Maybach revised and remodeled and in 1885, what is generally recognized as the prototype for the gas engine was patented. Shortly after, on November 10 1885 Paul, Daimler’s son took this baby on its first run from Cannstatt to Unterturkheim and back which is around 8 miles. There were no serious problems that were encountered except that the engine set fire to the saddle!
